It was the first day of classes and we got our very first design assignment in class: three 8.5 x 11 “swatches” that represent us as designers. Very open-ended, yet exciting at the same time. As Ellen pointed out, we don’t really know one another as designers yet, so this is a great assignment to introduce ourselves, share our backgrounds and highlight different topics of interest. I’m nervous because it’ll be the first thing we’ll all be showing one another, so of couse, it’ll be a lil’ like a judgement day. Nonetheless, I’m more excited than scared and I’m looking forward to seeing what everyone comes us with. I’ve thumbnailed out a few ideas. You can check out my chicken scratches above.
The class consists of both 1st and 2nd years and it was as exciting and interesting as I hoped it would be. We were all introduced to the BRAND NEW micadesign.org site. Check it out, you can see the full spectrum of GD MFAers, learn more about the program, see our inspirations and even follow us on twitter. Also the 2nd years presented their thesis development thus far. It was Pecha Kucha style (20 images for 20 seconds apiece, for a total time of 6 minutes, 40 seconds), which makes it a lot more engaging than a 40-deep deck. Topics covered included history, community development, gardening, semiotics, typography…the list goes on! All incredibly interesting—what a fantastic day.
