Guilt

Picture 1Picture 2

This screen print design I mocked up had me feeling guilty the second I finished it. I don’t feel like I have the right to say that it’s my design, but rather a blatant copy of another designer’s work. I took this image I found online (I believe from flickr) and literally pen traced the forms line by line. I loved the white space and implied structure of the form. Instead of using the graphics on the sides, I simplified it to vector shapes and I’ve used the one side of the structure as cropped boxes for a photo of an atlas map of the Maryland coast.

I love how it turned out, but it just feels wrong. It makes me question my ethics as a designer. Where do I draw the line between borrowing and strait up copying? I have to take this idea and make a new structure. It’s just too identical for me to comfortably call it my own.
